Chile starts selling medical cannabis in pharmacies
This unprecedented sale in Latin America is only carried out by two pharmacies in Santiago
The two premises that Farmacias El Carmen has in Santiago de Chile are the first two places in the country and even the region where medical cannabis sativa products can be purchased. The sale has started this Wednesday, May 10.
The products want to become an alternative for different pathologies, whose conventional treatments have not been effective. Prescription and medical supervision are required to be prescribed and purchased.
This marks the first time a North American cannabis producer has successfully distributed full-spectrum cannabis-based medicines to patients through pharmacies in the Americas. These are oily solutions, in bottles of 15, 10 and 5 millimeters, depending on the concentration of THC, the active principle of the plant.
According to the Chilean publication La Tercera, the arrival of the drug has been managed through a partnership with the laboratory Alef Biotechnology, which has obtained an authorization to produce medical cannabis for commercial purposes in the country.
“This is a pilot plan to give physicians access to a product with a high standard that gives them security and allows replicating results that have been obtained in other countries”, explains Roberto Roizman, chairman of Alef Biotechnology. Roizman says that Chile becomes the first country in Latin America to sell such a product in pharmacies.
